Lesson Study as a tool for improving teaching and learning practices

In December 2015, a regional seminar “Use of the Lesson Study approach for improving the practice of teaching and learning” was held in Arshaly secondary school №2 of Akmola region.

Arshaly secondary school number 2 is the leading school in the region, it regularly carries out work within the professional community network for broadcasting educational teacher experience aimed at improving practice of partner school teachers.
In December 2015, a regional seminar “Use of the Lesson Study approach for improving the practice of teaching and learning” was held in Arshaly secondary school №2 of Akmola region. Arshaly secondary school number 2 is the leading school in the region, it regularly carries out work within the professional community network for broadcasting educational teacher experience aimed at improving practice of partner school teachers.


The relevance of the workshop is in the fact that the Lesson Study approach is still regarded by Kazakhstani teachers as an innovation in teaching; but, nevertheless, there are schools that are actively and successfully implementing this approach into their practice and ready to share the experience. Arshaly secondary school № 2 is one the pioneer schools in this regard. The seminar was organized by the school teachers, headed by the school principal Slobodyanyuk Irina and the school leader Isaeva Irina. Among the seminar’s attendants was the methodologist of science and math of the Office of Education in Akmola region Syzdykova Gulmira.
The participants of the seminar were reported about the way the Lesson Study approach is implemented in Arshaly secondary school №2. The host school teachers conducted lessons on the following subjects: geography, “Law and Society “, chemistry. A particular feature of the preparatory phase was that the lesson planning was carried out by the joint team of the teachers involved in the Lesson Study process. In conclusion, a workshop “Rules of discussing lessons” was held for the seminar participants. At the end of each stage, the participants made feedback comments relating to the processes of teaching and learning.
In the final feedback, the seminar participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers of the seminar, noting that it helped them to understand how to organize effective class observation and answer the topical questions relating to the effective work of creative groups of teachers. The guest teachers noted the importance of implementation of the Lesson Study approach within the professional network community. In this connection, it was decided to hold the next seminar on the basis of Arshaly secondary school №2, the topic of the next seminar will relate to the influence of criteria-based assessment on the quality of students’ knowledge; the Lesson Study approach will be used as a tool for measuring the effectiveness of the assessment process.
